A landing page audit checklist you can actually use
Review one visitor journey and leave with a short, testable fix list.
Published September 7, 2026 · Layzr
Choose one landing page, one intended visitor and one next action before starting an audit. A page for someone comparing products needs different information from a page for someone ready to sign up. Write down where that visitor comes from and what the link or search result promised.
Use the checklist below on the published page, first on a phone and then on desktop. Record the exact element, the problem you observed and a proposed test. An audit finding is a hypothesis until you verify it with behavior or measurements.
1. Check what a new visitor can understand
- Can you identify the product or service from the first visible heading and paragraph?
- Does the page say who it helps and what task it helps them complete?
- Does the message match the query, advertisement or referring link that brought the visitor here?
- Can someone describe the offer without reading navigation menus or interpreting an abstract illustration?
For example, 'Unlock your potential' gives an unfamiliar visitor little to evaluate. 'Review your landing page's copy, layout and SEO' names the task. This is an illustrative rewrite, not evidence that a particular headline will increase conversion.
2. Follow the main call to action
- Click the primary button while signed out and note where it goes.
- Check that the button describes the next step accurately. A button promising a report should not unexpectedly open a sales booking form.
- Complete the first step of the flow. Record any required account, payment, input or permission that the landing page did not explain.
- Return to the landing page and check whether secondary actions distract from or support the intended journey.
If the process needs an account, say so near the action. If a free offer has a usage limit, explain it before the visitor commits. Clear expectations make the flow easier to evaluate.
3. Inspect the evidence behind the claims
- Show a real product screen or clearly labeled example of the output.
- Make customer quotations attributable where permission allows. Do not present sample quotes or fabricated ratings as customer evidence.
- Explain what the product checks, what it cannot check and what depends on the plan.
- Put pricing, cancellation terms and contact information where a buyer can find them.
- Support performance or revenue claims with the measurement period and method. Remove claims you cannot substantiate.
4. Use the page on a phone
- Read the first screen without zooming. Check whether overlays cover the heading or action.
- Use navigation, forms and the primary button with touch and keyboard where supported.
- Check form labels, error messages, focus visibility and recovery after an invalid input.
- Watch for content jumping as fonts, images or widgets load.
- Run the live URL through Layzr with General audit and the appropriate Mobile or Desktop setting. Record the available performance metrics and technical findings; the overall score is not a conversion score.
5. Check the search landing experience
- Open the intended URL directly and confirm it returns the content visitors expect.
- Give it a descriptive title and main heading that match the page's actual purpose.
- Check that the canonical URL points to the preferred version and the page is not accidentally marked noindex.
- Link to the page from a relevant, useful page on your own site.
- Use Search Console URL Inspection to check Google's indexing status, then examine the queries associated with this page.
If you get impressions without visits, use the Search Console diagnosis guide. Low rankings call for different work from a strong ranking with a weak click-through rate.
6. Turn observations into a fix list
For each finding, record: page element → observed problem → proposed change → verification. Fix a broken signup or unreadable mobile screen before debating a subtle color change. Then prioritize problems that prevent visitors from understanding or trusting the offer.
Recheck the changed element after release. If traffic is too low for a meaningful conversion comparison, start with a usability session and a functional check. Keep a record of what you learned rather than declaring every edit a conversion win.
